Individualism??

One secret to living harmoniously is the recognition that family members are unique. Sharing a residence is no guarantee that ideas will line up.

One person may think that having a neat and tidy home is important, creating a haven and sanctuary, while another person (perhaps an oldest daughter) prefers to live in utter chaos. It is the adult’s job to compromise, recognizing that a child’s room is their space and that it doesn’t have to be as orderly and as neat as the rest of the house.

Ever proud of my powers of concession and level head, I appreciated the randomness and uniqueness of Bigsis, Then she was away and needed a bag packed. I dutifully made my way down stairs and began opening drawers….. all were empty???? How could the drawers be empty??? Twice weekly a basket full of neatly folded and laundered clothes were sent down to be put away??

So I hunted and discovered piles of clothes stuffed into a closet, further piles shoved behind the bed and under a desk. I reach into the labyrinth at the bottom of her closet pulling out bundles of random clothes crumpled and mixed with pens, nail polish, books and who knows what else?

It seemed my powers of concession may be limited, some things I could live with, but this???? Reasonable step-mom flew out the window and today she will be cleaning her room and she WILL clean it proper!!! I TOLD HER, I WARNED HER, I expect a job WELL DONE to MY standards!!

So much for harmony and appreciating individuality????

I think she is taking advantage of your kind nature! I'm with you - tell her to clean up!!!

My girls are 7 and they HATE cleaning up but once a week it HAS to be done (it deteriorates gradually through the week and if we can catch up once a week it never gets totally trashed). Of course their idea of clean/tidy and mine are completely different LOL

Yes I agree she is taking advantage.... I really felt the old saying give an inch and they take a mile....... She's almost 12 and I have tried to be understanding that she was new to my home and the way I like things, I've walked her through the how tos and done it with her many times.... but it's been two years of living with us now and I think it is time for her to stand on her own two feet - that is even after I got a call at work of her crying begging for my help........ GULP..... stay strong!!
